Foot & Ankle Pain

Osteopathy for plantar fasciitis, Achilles pain, sprained ankles and flat foot, to restore movement and comfort.

Pain can occur in the foot and ankle for a number of reasons. The foot and ankle are made up of many small bones connected by ligaments, muscles and fascia, all working together to give the strength, stability and flexibility the foot needs to function. Common conditions include:

Acquired flat foot

When the inner arch of the foot flattens and the foot rolls inward (over-pronation). It is often apparent when the heels of shoes wear out quickly and unevenly. Over-pronation can strain your ankle joint and Achilles tendon and cause shin pain. Symptoms include pain, swelling, a change in foot shape, and knee pain.

Plantar fasciitis

Pain and inflammation in the plantar fascia, the band of tissue supporting the arch. It is often a sharp pain under the heel or instep, worse after standing for long periods or first thing in the morning. The sole can occasionally feel numb, tingly or slightly swollen.

Achilles pain

The Achilles tendon joins the calf muscles to the heel bone. Pain, inflammation or tendonitis here can cause pain and tightness at the back of the heel and lower calf.

Sprained ankle

Typically the result of suddenly twisting or going over on the ankle, most often straining the ligaments on the outside. Symptoms include swelling, bruising, pain and instability. Rest, ice, elevation and compression are advisable in the first 24 to 48 hours, and sometimes an x-ray is needed to rule out a fracture.

How an osteopath can help

  • Depending on the diagnosis, your age and fitness, we use gentle massage and manipulative techniques to improve the mobility of the joints and the flexibility of the muscles in the foot.
  • We often look at the knee, hip and lower back too, treating any joint restrictions and muscle tightness we find, as better movement higher up helps the foot and ankle function.
  • We may offer balancing, strengthening or loosening exercises.
  • We can advise on strapping, brace supports, footwear and lifestyle factors, and may refer you to a podiatrist or your GP where appropriate.
