What is osteopathy?

An evidence-informed, hands-on approach to diagnosing and treating pain, and to keeping you moving well.

A whole-body system of diagnosis and treatment

Osteopathy is a system of diagnosis and treatment for a wide range of conditions. It works with both the structure and function of the body, based on the principle that wellbeing depends on the skeleton, muscles, ligaments and connective tissues working smoothly together.

Osteopaths use touch, physical manipulation, stretching and massage to increase the mobility of joints, relieve muscle tension, enhance blood and nerve supply to tissues, and support your body’s own healing. Your osteopath may also advise on posture and exercises to aid recovery, promote health and prevent symptoms returning.

Your visit, step by step

WHAT TO EXPECT

Your first consultation

Lasting roughly one hour, this covers your symptoms, medical history, lifestyle and general health. If your history is extensive, it can help to bring a list of any medication.

Physical examination

The osteopath examines the painful areas and asks you to move through various positions. Further checks, such as of the cardiovascular system, are sometimes needed. You may be asked to remove some clothing; loose shorts and a t-shirt are fine, and towels are always provided.

Diagnosis and plan

Your osteopath makes a diagnosis and discusses a course of treatment, which may combine manual therapy, home exercises and lifestyle changes. Treatment aims to be as comfortable as possible, and we stop if you feel too much discomfort.

Follow-up appointments

Lasting up to 30 minutes, these include a quick review and physical assessment, with most of the time spent on treatment.
