Treatment for rotator cuff pain, frozen shoulder, referred pain and stiffness, to restore movement and ease discomfort.
Shoulder pain is common and can be caused by a number of conditions, including:
Rotator cuff problems
Pain in the shoulder or upper arm, particularly when lifting the arm, lying on it or using the sore muscles. It often results from repetitive overuse during a sport or activity, or from a shoulder injury. Age can also play a part.
Acromioclavicular joint pain
A painful joint at the tip of the shoulder, where the collarbone and shoulder blade meet.
Frozen shoulder (adhesive capsulitis)
The painful, gradual stiffening of the shoulder capsule. The shoulder can become so stiff and painful that it limits your ability to use your arm in everyday activities.
Referred shoulder pain
Pain felt in the shoulder that is actually referred from elsewhere, usually the neck or upper back.
Osteoarthritis
Progressive wearing of the joint cartilage, leading to the bones rubbing together and causing pain. Symptoms include swelling, stiffness, aching and sharp, stabbing pains, and it is more likely after previous trauma or surgery.
Shoulder instability
Dislocation or excessive movement of the shoulder joint.
How an osteopath can help
- Shoulder problems are often complex and can take time to resolve. Your osteopath will work with you to understand the cause.
- Depending on your age, fitness and diagnosis, we may use massage, rhythmic articulation and stretching to improve movement and reduce tension in tight muscles.
- Treatment is individual, and we may also work on the neck, upper and mid back, shoulder blade, and sometimes the low back and hips if they are contributing to your pain.
- We may offer strengthening or loosening exercises and advice on posture and how you use your shoulder.
- X-rays, scans or other tests may be needed, and we may refer you to your GP for further treatment.
